About Angels With Paws

Jean Ausenbaugh had been a volunteer in a local shelter for five years.  As a dedicated foster she has done everything in her power to save as many animals as possible.

On September 17, 2003, she bought a restaurant on Youngfield that had been empty for a couple of years.  It was “discovered” by Val Papenfus, a former employee at the local shelter.  It took until February 7, 2004, for the renovation to be done.  In the short time since the opening of Angels With Paws, Jean, and a group of volunteers who helped during the renovation and since have saved over 11,000 animals, mostly cats and kittens,  and including 100 dogs.

Angels With Paws is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer organization, which believes ALL animals have the right to life. This includes a long term care solution for animals in need or that are not adopted (to include feral, Felv/Fiv, and senior animals).  Our dream is to see the day when no adoptable animal will be euthanized.

We operate a mainly cage-free friendly environment providing medical and rehabilitation services when needed.  We are part of a network of caring people that reaches far and wide and will work with local organizations in the metro Denver area to reduce pet overpopulation by promoting the necessity to spay and neuter.  We will also emphasize the cruelty of declawing. We continue to work toward that goal, saving lives one life at a time.

Our shelter is located at 2540 Youngfield Street in Lakewood. Our phone number is 303-274-2264. The shelter is open from 1:00pm – 6:00pm Tuesday – Sunday.  We are closed on Mondays.

UPDATE: Sadly we lost Jean on June 9, 2020. Our hope is that Jean Ausenbaugh’s vision will not end with her passing.
